New Video: Tech N9ne – ‘What If It Was Me’ (Feat. Krizz Kaliko)

Tech N9ne’s new album The Storm hits stores on December 9th and the indie king continues to build momentum as he drops another new single and video today, ‘What If It Was Me’. The Krizz Kaliko-featured song/video addresses the complex nature of Police encounters and how a misunderstanding can go wrong on either side. A Tribe Called Quest’s new album is tear-jerking, essential protest music

When A Tribe Called Quest reunited to perform on The Tonight Show last fall, the group — Q-Tip, Ali Shaheed Muhammad, Jarobi White, and Phife Dawg — couldn’t know what 2016 would bring. They were pioneers returned from hip-hop’s golden age, but not prophets. They couldn’t see Donald Trump taking the White House. They couldn’t see the rise of the alt-rightas a significant corner of the electorate. And no one could foresee the personal tragedy the group would face: Phife Dawg’s too-soon death from diabetes.

One year later, we have President-elect Trump and an ascendent alt-right, but we also have We got it from Here… Thank You 4 Your service, ATCQ’s first album in 18 years and also its last. It’s an album that celebrates the group’s past and looks consciously towards to future. It also honors the memory of Phife Dawg himself, who gave the record its title. But most of all, it’s a powerful protest album from start to finish, whose force is only heightened by the result of this past Election Day.

Honestly, what else could an album be when its first track, “The Space Program,” laments there being “no space program for niggas?”

As he prepares for his 11th studio album, Chicago MC Common stopped by Billboard on Friday (Sept. 30) to discuss the theme behind his forthcoming project and the significance of its title single "Black America Again."

Common released the video for "Black America Again" last week and the emotional visual focused on the recent deaths of unarmed black men whose lives were taken by police officers. The rapper originally planned to label his album Little Chicago Boy but opted for a title that packed a greater meaning behind it. "I felt like Black America Again was a strong statement and it also was a way to start the conversation to say lack America Again isn't only about the protesting and the justice," Common told Billboard. "Black America Again is about humanity and how we express ourselves, love and ways of feeling free.
